Launching of Construction of Drain Network at Midlands

A site visit was carried out on 19 February 2025, by the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness for the launching of construction of drain network at Midlands Village. The Minister of Tourism, Mr Christian Harold Richard Duval as well as representatives of the Ministry of National Infrastructure, the Road Development Authority and the Land Drainage Authority were also present on the site.

In a statement, Minister Gunness said that the projects are considered as urgent and essential as it concerns the well-being of the inhabitants of Midlands. In times of heavy rainfall, the water level in some parts of the village can rise up to two metres, thus seriously impacting on properties and houses, he added.

In light of the above, several infrastructure projects, to the tune of approximately Rs 119 million, and which aim at mitigating flooding risks during heavy rainfall as well as enhancing the welfare of residents are being implemented in the region of Midlands.

Phase 1 of the project involves construction of approximately 600m of roadside drain along Coriolis Road B86, Pitel – La Chartreuse Road B52 and Budaloo Street. The contract has been awarded to J. Dookhun & Sons Ltd to the tune of around Rs 76 million. Works started on 23 January 2025 and are expected to be completed by 20 October 2025.
